"I "borrowed" this recipe from the kitchen at my college because I fell in love with these bars. They are so much better than store-bought, and you can add or subtract ingredients as you wish. They make a perfect on-the-go snack; a much healthier alternative to chips or cookies, especially for kids (Great for lunch boxes!)"

  1. This is a most excellent recipe. My family said they were better than any granola bar from a store! Very easy to make. You could do it with your kids if you have some. Note: I cut the sugar to 1 cup and used organic, I used whole wheat pastry flour instead of white, used only half the chocolate chips and replaced the other half with coconut.Nevertheless! Chewy, moist, and flavorful and very sweet! A big must if you're looking for that granola bar! Thanks!

  2. This was fantastic. I made a few changes to make it a bit more healthy. I reduced the sugar to 3/4c of brown sugar, added only a tbsp of honey, 1/2 c of chocolate chips, used whole wheat flour, and instead of rice crispies I used the Original Fiber One cereal. Cooked for only 17 minutes. They're great!

  4. Another substitution review...sorry...but we are trying to cut down on sugar and eat healthier and this looked like a great recipe to play with! I used 1/2 cup unpacked brown sugar, 1 tbsp honey, no white sugar, 1/2 cup applesauce and only 1 tbsp butter. Instead of rice krispies, I used a multigrain kashi cereal because that is what I had on hand. I also used white whole wheat flour and 1/2 of the chocolate chips. I used 1/2 cup chopped cashew, almond and pecans and I threw in about 1/4 cup of ground flax seed. I'm sure the original recipe is awesome, because my concoction was really good! Thanks for posting such a versatile recipe!

  5. My family loves these granola bars. As suggested by others, I used less sugar (about 3/4 cup brown sugar, no white sugar) and they were excellent. They're a special lunchbox treat for my son :)

Tweaks

  1. I doubled recipe and used a lasagna pan. Used only brown sugar and only 1 cup for the entire pan. Added pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries, raisins, rice crispies and only a few chocolate chips. used half white flour and half whole wheat flour. YUMMY I find whole wheat flour has a more nutty flavour.

  2. I make this all the time and always get great reviews. I substitute white chocolate chips for regular chocolate and dried cranberries for the raisins. I also add flax seed, too. Sometimes I will use 1/4 cup of butter and a 1/4 cup of applesauce. Thanks for posting this recipe!!!

  4. Per the other reviews, I used omitted the white sugar. We are allergic to nuts so I substituted Grape Nut cereal for the almonds, and whole wheat flour. Tasted like a cookie, very sweet. Next time I will reduce the amount of brown sugar to 3/4 cup and up the rice crispie cereal to 2 cups because that adds a little airy crunch. We had it for a dessert after dinner. I suggested reducing the amount of chocolate chips but the kids said NO. Thank you for a great recipe.

  5. I made these last night for DD to take to a lacrosse game for her and her friends. These are excellent. I wrapped them up in waxed paper and they are a great take along treat. I didn't use the raisins and subbed butterscotch chips for the chocolate ones. Delicious. Thank you for sharing with us.

I am a single gal, living on my own; currently working as an Occupational Therapist & living in Cumberland, MD. (It is "God's Country" out here...beautiful!) I LOVE to cook and bake, and love anything that looks, tastes, smells, or even closely resembles a veggie. I LOVE moo-cows, and therefore, cannot bring myself to eat any part of the adorable critters (i.e. NO RED MEAT!!) I love the outdoors, and pride myself on being the master griller on the fire pit. My mother's side of the family is 100% Polish, so I have an inborn passion for cooking...unfortunately, along with that comes a love of eating, too!! But, hey..u only live once, so I say "EAT, DRINK, and BE MERRY!!!"
